“Resilience is the ability to handle life’s setbacks and recover from difficulties. It encompasses the capacity to adapt positively in the face of adversity, stress, or trauma. Resilience can be developed through building strong relationships, maintaining a positive outlook, and developing problem-solving skills.”-Kendra Cherry MSEd, (Verywell Mind).
We can build strong relationships by spending quality time with our neighbors and friends. Whether a teenager, young adult, or senior, we can be a strong community member and attend social gatherings and local events like Night Out Against Crime, (which is August 21st from 6pm-8pm at North Ogden Park). Relationships are also built by volunteering in the community, which builds trust with each other and community leaders.
We can maintain a positive outlook by practicing gratitude, focusing on our strengths, surrounding ourselves with positive people and engaging in physical activities.
Lastly, we can develop problem solving skills by understanding the problem, gathering information, implementing solutions, and adjusting as needed. Repeat these steps and you will become an excellent problem solver.
These developments toward resilience may seem simple, but be patient with yourself, as it can often take a lifetime to become resilient.
As we face the future together as a community, may we all be resilient to the adversities, trauma and stress that may come our way, even if it is by our own hand. When these times arise try to remember, “When a storm of harassment disturbs our thinking and brings us down to our knees, the umbrella of our imagination can shield us against destructive aggression.” ("The umbrella")”-Erik Pevernagie.
